Gifts To Heritage After Difficulties Reported

Since newspaper publicity on the financial difficulties of Heritage (Canterbury), dona- ; tions amounting to £l5O had been received, the president (Mr W. G. Quirk) said at the twenty-first annual meeting of Heritage last evening. Mr Quirk said the annual report which had been published showed the concern of the executive at the depletion of funds by £l2OO, leaving just over £6OOO, which would last about five years. “Possibly that is a little bit gloomy and our friends would come to the rescue before that,” said Mr Quirk. He said they were loth to go to the public with an appeal and that in the meantime they should be able to carry on. He was concerned at the loss of subscribing members. He asked members to stay with Heritage as they had work ahead for at least eight to 10 years. After the adoption of the report Mr B. H. McMaster presented a cheque for £2O on behalf of the Christchurch branch of the Air Force Association. Rear-Admiral J. R. Reedy, Commander of the United States Naval Antarctic Support Force, the guest speaker, said that Heritage, which had no exact counterpart in the

United States, should never be allowed to die or fade away. What impressed him most about Heritage was the way in which small, personal things were provided for the children of men killed at war or who died as a result of war injuries. Heritage put itself in the place of a wise father, he said. Admiral Reedy gave an outline of organisations in the United States which assisted widows and families of servicemen. He then showed slides of operations in the Antarctic and a film of recent scientific work being done there. All existing officers were reelected. They are as follows: President, Mr W. G. Quirk; vice-presidents, Messrs G. Manning, H G. Royds and J. N. Matson; secretary-treasurer, Mr D. W. Bain; executive, Dr. W. Mark Brown, Messrs C. L. Bacon, W. Kennedy, John Stewart H. Stuart Jones, A. Hearn, K. A. Gough, Dr. E. B. Reilly, and Dr. T. R. Anderson; ex-officio, Messrs D. Barrett (R.S.A.), W. J. Boyd (vocational and educational guidance), K. L. G. Munn (rehabilitation), and E. M. Me Sherry (health and recreation): visitor, Mrs Elliot Myers.
