CRISIS IN FOOD
‘Worst Over’ In India
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) NEW DELHI, Nov. 17. India's Food Minister, Mr Chidambaram Subramaniam told Parliament today that the worst of the country’s food crisis was over, the Associated Press reported. He said the Government was confident of maintaining necessary supplies to Kerala and other States that have been short. He conceded faulty distribution was the cause of famine conditions in Kerala and an artificial scarcity of rice had been created because of Government buying in an effort to control prices. Angry Opposition members, spearheaded by the Communists, demanded adjournment of normal Parliamentary business to discuss the food crisis. The Speaker, Mr Hukum Singh, agreed to allow time for a special debate on food. Mr Subramaniam said wheat and rice was being rushed to needy Kerala from adjoining Andhra Pradesh State, where there is a surplus. and from central reserves.
