The Canterbury club’s championship play is In full swing and the more seasoned teams are not having the results all in their favour. The four skipped by the president. A. Taylor, recently defeated a strong team skipped by W. Cook by a narrow margin by good, steady play, while G. Dunn’s team disposed of a well-balanced combination led by E. G. Carnie. In the latter game adventurous play throughout attracted many spectators and the result was decided only on the last end. R. Little, a new member formerly from the West Coast, and now playing third for Dunn, produced a good variety of well-placed shots. He gives promise of making his presence felt in the club’s competitions, particularly if he pays more attention to his foot-work. To date members have enjoyed excellent greens] and the playing surface is] rapidly reaching a state of perfection. ;k i: #

St. Martin's won their annual fixture with Opawa for the Brian O’Halloran Memorial Trophy recently, the score being 309 to 282. The annual Show Day open tournament was won by Simpson’s St. Martin rink, and the run-ner-up was Deavoll’s (Sydenham). Club competitions are well on the way. Games are played in the evenings and

the club’s newly-installed lighting allowing games to be played to a finish.

The pavilion clock, which has looked down on the Sumner green for the last 50 years, has now been replaced by an electric one. The old clock, which had become rather temperamental over the last few years, was a gift from Watsons, the Jewellers, in 1914, when the pavilion was built, The new electric clock is also a gift and the club is greatly indebted to Mr C. P. Philpott, a past president, for his generosity. ❖ £ The Papanui club's No. 2 three fours team has played excellent bowls with three five-point wins while R. Ritchie’s four has won all three games so far. Bad weather prevented the completion on the due date of the first round of the club champion pairs and singles. In this round, one pair played outstanding bowls, H. Maher arid his lead, B. Mclntosh, beating R. Ritchie and J. Hool. In the first round of the singles, E. Alexander, a younger member of the club, played very well against E. Foster, last year’s winner, land was only defeated on the iiast two ends. H. Cook, a third year member, played excellent bowls in a match against W. Jones and was only narrowly beaten in the last end on a close measure.

The first round of the president’s fours is now completed and will soon be at an interesting stage.

Recently Opawa held a monster all day tournament. Twenty-eight rinks took part and the standard of play was very high considering it was held early in the season. D.

Finnie's team was the winner with Williams of Linwood in second place, K. Murray (Opawa) third, and D. Cowles !<United) fourth.

The Canterbury club suffered a severe loss during play in the fours competition last Saturday morning when M. M. Gordon collapsed and died. Formerly of Dunedin. Mr Gordon was a bowler of high merit, and although a comparatively new member to Canterbury, he won a wide circle of friends in a short period. His skill as a bowler was quickly recognised and his passing has left a gap in the ranks of the betterclass skips in the club.

This week, there has been a break in champion rinks games at the Sumner club’s green, but several interesting champion singles were played. Of particular note was a game between H. Swallow and S. La Roche. La Roche had a good lead early but Swallow gradually closed the gap until I they were 15-15 on the twenty-! first end. On the extra end.; La Roche drew the winning; shot. 16-15. Later Swallow lost his second life to R. S. Rudd by a comfortable mar gin. In another close and interesting game; R. E. Huston 1 i defeated C. P. Philpott, scoring the vital point on the last end. Results of the champion pairs played were F. W 1 Squirrell and S. G. Dailey beat J. C. Banfield and E. H.| Merrells; C. B. Idle and 0. P. Anderson beat J. Cameron and A. C. Clibborn; and L. C. Terrell and J. Smith beat H. E. Robinson and F. G. Pettit. The first of the club's mixed tournaments was held on Sunday with a capacity entry. The winner was an all Sumner rink of Mrs M. Davies, Mr J. Smith, and Mr and Mrs G. Papps.

A. Taylor, a Christchurch club player who has started the season in top form, scored an eight and a seven with his team in the three fours competition last Saturday and followed this with another seven in club play. In the club fours competition, he beat I'. L. Donnelly and W. Lowrie beat M. K. Boon. In the championship fours, Lowrie lost to E. Bromley,' and D. Langley beat T. Tench. E. Standring beat R.
