NEW PARK PLAN

Work Begun At New Brighton

A start was made on Tuesday on clearing Queen Elizabeth II Park in readiness for the first stage of development approved by the City Council on Monday evening. Rails of the old New Brighton trotting course were taken down and will form part of the surplus equipment to be auctioned on November 28. Cr. P. J. Skellerup, chairman of the reserves committee, said he hoped the allweather track would be installed by next year. Some of the park would have to be levelled by bulldozers and some filling would also be needed. This could be done in the early autumn to avoid a dust nuisance.

The best type of track possible would be put down, and the council would be relying on information received from the Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. Once that information was available a start should be made on plans for the track.
