Women’s Softball Avon Now Only Unbeaten Team In Competition

Beating Western Suburbs in the senior women's softball competition on Saturday, Avon is now the only unbeaten team in the competition. West Old Girls, who had been joint leaders. were beaten by a rejuvenated Monowai team. Spreydon, fielding loosely, was easily beaten by Kaiapoi. Results:— Avon B, Western Suburbs 3. Honowai 14, West Old Girls 0. Kaiapoi 12, Spreydon 4. Avon v. Western Suburbs In a poor fielding game, Avon easily took the batting honours. Avon started strongly when R. Lanmi and M. Skevington scored three runs, a lead it held until the fourth' innings.

when T. Latters scored from an outfield catch.

H. Johnson, after hitting a three-bagger, scored another run in the fifth innings on a passed ball. In the sixth innings Western Suburbs scored three runs with no batters out. Unfortunately the side could not maintain the effort and the next three batters were out without addition to the score. Avon in its last bat showed more agility, and three runners crossed the plate safely. West Old Girls v. Monowai West Old Girls found B. Makinson on the mound for Monowai in devastating form. Apart from gaining nine strike outs, it was not until the last innings that West Old Girls managed to hit her pitching safely. A pleasing feature of Monowai’s play was its fielding. After a very poor display in its last game the fielding of the team showed a vast improvement. Showing out well in this department were M. Hapuka, B. Turbott, and Makinson. Monowai began strongly, and had a lead of five runs to the end of the second innings. In its last two innings Monowai batted powerfully to score nine runs.

Spreydon v. Kaiapoi If the Spreydon team had produced better form in the field in its game with Kaiapoi the result may have been much closer. The Spreydon fielders made the error of waiting until the ball was fielded before thinking about what they would do with it. This was one reason why there was so much senseless throwing in the first two innings, during which Kaiapoi took a strong hold on the game by scoring nine runs. Spreydon's fielding Improved considerably from the third innings, and Kaiapoi only managed to score a further three runs, one of these coming from a long home run by M. Green. Spreydon failed to score until the sixth innings, when it batted strongly to score four runs.

Lower grade results: — Second Grade. —West Old Girls 6, Spreydon 3; Vanguard 9, Monowai 1. Third Grade.—Avon 16. West Old Girls 12: Western Suburbs 12, United 11; Templeton 11, Vanguard 10.
