White Rajah Close Second

Summer Magic narrowly beat the faster-finishing White Rajah in the Welcome Stakes at Riccarton on Saturday. But with better luck early in the race White Rajah would have completed a notable family double in the race. HU dam, Blonde Sprite, won the Welcome Stakes seven years ago in the same colours, those of Mr W. H. Williamson Summer Magic was one of the most striking youngsters in the field, and he is assembling a record to match his looks for the successful Gore trainer, E. A. Winsloe, who raced him in partnership with Mr S. G. Farry. This was bis second win in four starts. J. R. Dowling won the race for the Summertime-Taj colt when he shot him away to a lead of about three lengths with the race little more than half over. Just before he did so White Rajah had lost ground in about the third line when jammed in behind one of his rivals that was shifting ground. When White Rajah cleared the pack to go out after Summer Magic the Gore colt had a wide lead, but the Riccarton youngster ran the last furlong brilliantly and went under by only a neck. Captain's Command, which had been runner-up to Summer Magic at Gore, also ran a creditable race for third. Calm Comet To Carry More (N.Z. Press Association) WANGANUI, October 8. For his success in the Mervyn Wells Memorial Handicap at the Cambridge meeting Calm Comet has been rehandicapped 61b to 8-1 in the Hamilton Centennial Cup on the first day of the Waikato Racing Club's meeting next Saturday. Calm Comet has been rehandicapped 61b to 7-13 for the Waikato Gold Cup on the second day. Other rehandicaps for the Waikato meeting are:— Tamahere Juvenile Handicap: Blue Special, 51b to 8-5; Payee, 51b to 8-3. Bruntwood Handicap: Courtship, 61b to 8-7.
