Tasman Lad’s Rider Had Stirrup Trouble

The second favourite in the New Zealand Cup, Tasman Lad <R. J. Jury) was the subject of an Inquiry after the race. Jury told the judicial committee that the buckle of his inside stirrup leather came undone with about a mile to run.

He was in considerable difficulties from there on and had no option but to let his mount pull his way quickly to the front. M. J. Dombroski, the rider of Prince Murat in the Waimairi High-weight, was fined £lO for causing interference to the third and fourth placegetters, Great Howe and Everglades. The committee found that the interference did not affect the result of the race and placings were allowed to stand.

In the Spring Plate Byair suffered a fracture of the off fore sesamoid bone and was destroyed. His ridir, E. G. Low, said no other horse or rider interfered with him at the point where the injury was incurred. About five furlongs from home in the New Zealand Derby Faloose <D. N. Hadfield) was restrained when making the pace and immediately passed by Combination and His Grace and later by other runners. Hadfield said his mount shied at a person taking a photograph on the inside of the running rail. Faloose ran on in the straight to regain third place in the event, although a long way from the winner.

After the Hagley Handicap Depending was examined by the veterinary surgeon, who reported that she bled from the nose and a laceration inside

her cheek. He considered It possible that the bleeding was caused by a kick suffered by Depending before the race. He recommended Depending be given a hard trial before being allowed to start again. When the gates opened in the Stewards’ Canadiana (J. M. Cappie) jumped towards the inside and caused the inside runners to be tightened for room. After questioning Cappie and other riders concerned, the evidence was found to be conflicting and accordingly no charge was laid.
