Cup Horses Show Good Form At Addington

Orbiter and Vanderford, two of the popular fancies for the New Zealand Cup tomorrow, completed their preparations for the event with easy work-outs at Addington at the week-end. Deft, Garcon d’Or and Jay Ar were other cup candidates to work pleasingly. The horses which worked on Saturday and yesterday had perfect footing. The weather was fine both mornings.

Vanderford worked on Saturday, giving Talent and Local John a start of more than three seconds from the mile and a half. He sprinted his opening quarter in 28 4-5, at which stage he was just behind his stablemates. He raced past them leaving the back straight and completed his opening half-mile in 57 3-5.

The pace slackened in the middle stages and Vanderford completed the full distance in 3:12 4-5, the last half-mile very easily in 1:5 4-5, and the final quarter in 32 4-5. Vanderford looks a picture for tomorrow’s race and it will be surprising if he fails to show up. Orbiter attracted attention yesterday when he strode over 12 furlongs on his own in 3:24 4-5, the last half-mile in 1:7 2-5, and the final quarter in 31 2-5. Orbiter worked just as hard as was required and was most impressive. He, too, looks ready to run the race of his career. Kentucky Blue made the early pace for Deft and Mighty Chief in an easy run over 12 furlongs in 3:26. Deft and Mighty Chief drew away in the straight and finished together under a hold after recording 1:3 for their final half-mile, and 29 3-5 for the last quarter. Deft looks in great heart, while Mighty Chief’s run was a splendid trial for the Intro-

ductory Handicap. He looks improved as a result of the rim he had at the recent trials. Jay Ar made almost all of the pace and finished about a length in front of Garcon d’Or at the end of two miles in 4:29 4-5, the last half-mile in 1:2 1-5, and the final quarter in 30 45. Going Easily Both Jay Ar and Garcon d’Or were pacing under a hold at the finish, but Garcon d’Or went to a tangle just after passing the post. Mighty Hanover made the pace for Turbulence. Gay Return and Scotleigh in a run over two miles, Don Caesar joining them after half a mile. Avante had a short lead over his rivals at the finsishin after recording 4:29 1-5, the last half-mile in about 1:7 and the final quarter in about 33.

Mighty Hanover looks ready to make a bold bid to win the Worthy Queen Handicap for a second time, while Avante should give a good account of himself in the Canterbury Handicap. Sunset Chief made the pace for Smokey Belle and Doctor Barry over 12 furlongs. Smokey Belle dropped out in the straight, but the other two were pacing comfortably on terms at the finish. They recorded 3:13 3-5, the last half-mile in 1:2, and the final quarter in 30 4-5.

Sunset Chief and Doctor Barry are candidates for the New Zealand Derby Stakes. Admiral made the pace and finished clear of Flying Blue and Society Maid at the end of 12 furlongs in 3:19 3-5, the last half-mile in 59 2-5, and the final quarter in 30 3-5.

Junior Royal took the lead after two furlongs, but was being shaded by Peerswick at the end of 12 furlongs in 3: 14 3-5, with Happy Ending three lengths back. They sprinted their last half-mile comfortably in 1:4 3-5, and the final quarter in 31 15. Royal Fame was going easily at the end of 12 furlongs in company with Midnight Lace in 3:29, the last half-mile in 1:8, and the final quarter in 32. Golden Sunset and La Garrison, assisted Dy a galloping pacemaker, completed the last 10 of 12 furlongs in 2:47 1-5, the last half-mile in 1:3 4-5, and the final quarter in 31 15. Ali Bey trotted solidly on his own, completing his final half-mile in 1:5. He looks a fit runner for the Introductory Handicap. Compromise and Tunnel Road were others to record pleasing trials, but they were not timed. Dreaming and Ali Baba worked over an easy two miles on Saturday in 4:46 1-5, the last quarter in 34 4-5 Dreaming looks to be returning to her best form.
