LORDSHIP MAY WIN N.Z. CUP

Vanderford And Orbiter Impress Lordship’s brilliance is expected to enable him to overcome his handicap of 24 yards and win the New Zealand Cup for a second time at Addington Raceway tomorrow. Lord ship looks well placed in this race considering his outstanding record. While he looks the logical winner, it is not difficult to imagine victory going to Orbiter or Vanderford; and several others, if favoured with the run of the race, could come out on top and upset calculations. It is doubtful if any of the others in the field can match Lordship for sheer speed, but he has an odd chink in his make-up. He usually lashes out when brought into line and seldom stands still for more than a second or two.

Even so, he seldom loses much ground at the start of his races and once under way he does not pull too hard. If he makes his usual smooth getaway, he is certain to lie one of the principals in the finish no matter how the race is run.

Orbiter is probably the most foolproof pacer in the field. He can accelerate quickly from the start, always races kindly; can race anywhere in a field; and make more than one sharp run in a race.

In addition, Orbiter has the performances to back up his prospects. He led from end to end when he won the New Brighton Cup last February In 4:14 4-5, while he won the Hannon Memorial Handicap at Oamaru on October 26 and eight days later the New Zealand Cup trial. On breeding, too. Orbiter must appeal. He is closely related to the triple New Zealand Cup winner, Indianapolis, and an early cup winner in Wrackler.

Twelve months ago Vanderford was a dominating cup favourite, but his supporters were left lamenting when he stopped after making all of the pace. Vanderford had had some strenuous racing earlier in the spring and that, too. probably contributed to his failure in the cup. This year care has been taken by his trainer, A. J. Bourne, and driver, M. Holmes, to keep him fresh. He has been a model of consistency in his races and appears to have thrived. If Holmes can keep him covered up in the field until the final furlong, it will not surprise to see him sweep round his rivals and win for his Auckland owner, Mr W. D. Barnes. Until he broke badly at the cup trials. Cairnbrae was well to the fore among the cup prospects. Cairnbrae is far from reliable at the start, but if he does not lose more than 12 yards he could well figure in the finish as he has superior stamina to most in the race. Bracket Of Three Caimbrae will be bracketed with a form runner in King Hal. and an improving pacer in Urrall, which has paced encouraging races in the last few weeks. Urrall completed his cup I preparation in dashing stvle at Pleasant Point on Saturday when he won over 13 furlongs in 3:30. outstanding time on a rough track. Another bracket assured of solid support is that of Garcon d’Or and Jay Ar. Both are in hard condition and worked pleasingly at Addington yesterday. They have shown their best form over distances of up to 13 furlongs, but both have been successful over two miles. Garcon d’Or had five wins earlier in the season and it is possible that he might be on the decline. However, he went well enough at the trials to suggest that he is retaining his top form and a win for him is not a forlorn possibility. Jay Ar often races in the manner of a cup winner, but other times he has been a shade disappointing. One of his peak performances would land him in the finish. Oreti, fourth in the race 12 i months ago, two fit Auckland' contenders in Waitaki Hanover and Gay Reel, and Deft, a consistent performer under Invitation conditions, are others capable of adding interest to the finish, but it is hard to see them finishing in front of Lordship, Orbiter or Vanderford. lair weather is forecast and the track should be in perfect condition. Was unlucky when third at Forbury at his last start. One of the brighter prospects. ASIA MINOR: Good third behind Molly’s Report and Medieval at Auckland on October 26. Might be returning to form. CASTLETON’S GIFT: Failed to show up at Oamaru or at trials. Is capable when right, but might need race. FORWARD MARCH: Second at Manawatu meeting bn Saturday. Previous form most impressive. Came home well from long way back for eighth in Hannon Memorial. Broke at trials and finished ninth. Is outstanding stayer which looks right at his peak. With smooth beginning could outstay most in the field and a winning run would not be complete surprise. DEFT: Is giving away time to start. Has seldom paced a bad race. Second to Garry Logan at Forbury and finished fast for second to Orbiter in Hannon Memorial. Hardiy looks a winning prospect, but could scramble into a place. GARCON D’OR: Gained five successive wins earlier in the season, including the Ashburton Flying Stakes. Failed badly at Auckland last month, but went much better when fourth at trials. Should master the distance competently and might not be a forlorn chance. GAY REEL: Has been placed in last four of six starts this season, including fourth in two-mile race won by Great Adios on October 26. In that race she finished in great style from mid-field at the half-mile. Is reported to be better than ever. However, might find opposition a little classy. JAY AR: Has mixed good and only fair efforts in nine starts, which have resulted in one win and three placings. Came home well for seventh over two miles at Auckland last time out. Capable pacer certain to show to advantage. KING HAL: Finished close fifth at trials, following on some splendid racing, which included a win over 13 furlongs at Addington in September. Battled on for fifth in Hannon Memorial last time out. Looks well and will be sound second string for stable. ORBITER: Wins at Oamaru and trials have enhanced his prospects. Has never looked better and will need to receive only average luck in the running to be one of the principals in the finish. Stays well and could come out on top. URRALL: Has paced improved races lately for a fifth at Forbury and a fourth in the Hannon Memorial. In both races he finished boldly. Has sound record as a stayer and should be close up most of the way. Won at Pleasant Point on | Saturday in 3:30 for 13 furlongs. VALCADOR: Recent efforts have been disappointing. Makes little appeal on a firm track, and in a fast-run race. VANDERFORD: Has had a care

ful preparation timed to have him at his peak tomorrow. Has raced most consistently and has been once unplaced after meeting trouble from nine starts. Won free-for-all at Auckland and finished a good third over two miles at the same meeting. Came home well from bad position for third at trials. If covered up until inside the last furlong, could outsprlnt most of his rivals. Has never looked better.

DANDY BRIAR: Has Improved at each appearance for C. C. Devine Was running on seventh at trials after starting slowly. Broke and finished fourteenth in Hannon Memorial. Has shown sound staying form at times, but will have to be taken on trust. ORETI: Finished eighth after slow start at trials. Went fair race for seventh in Hannon Memorial. Has not shown form this term in four starts, but in several of his races he has been running on gamely and has not been far away at the finish. Finished fourth in the cup last year. Has plenty of stamina and could be place chance. WAITAKI HANOVER: Win and three placings from eight starts, which have brought him to high peak of fitness. Was second to Vanderford in free-for-all at Auckland. Capable pacer when caught in generous mood, but doubtful whether he has sufficient class to win this race if it develops into a true test of stamina. LORDSHIP: Most brilliant pacer in commission and cannot be left out of calculations from comparatively luxury mark of 24 yards. Finished third in the Ashburton Flying Stakes from 48 yards in world record time. Was prominent until he broke in the Hannon Memorial. Showed great brilliance to lead inside the last halfmile at trials and was not extended in the straight. Looks in great heart and with average luck shouiq go close to winning the race for second time. Lordship Orbiter Vanderford

No appeal. SENSATIONAL: Made up ground for third to Misty Haze and Caught Napping at Kaikoura. Bracketed with King Gipsy. SONNY JIM: Second to Bob Again at Oamaru. Has improved considerably and has gone well at trials in the meantime. TINY SAL: Doubtful starter. VISTA ABBEY: Failed at Otaki meeting last Tuesday. Has drawn badly and does not appeal. SMOKEY RANGE: Showed speed in some of his races last season, but inclined to race erratically. Could be more solid now, and might surprise. RUSSELL GEE: Promising halfbrother to Falsehood. Won narrowly at Hutt Park on October 31. Might need more experience. DOCTOR BARRY: One of most highly-regarded young pacers in commission. DARK LOUISE: Has had a chance to freshen up since racing in September. Is always capable of a bold showing. LOGHGAIR: Three seconds and a fourth from four starts this season. Highlyregarded four-year-old overdue for a win. Could be the hardest for Adioway to beat. SOCIETY MAID: Won well at Forbury Park, beating Jilaire after being left without a trail. Could add interest. AHUMAI: Looks well, but might find this field a little classy. ANARCA DIRECT: Form this season has been disappointing. Wildwood Chief and Cloudage. Is not good beginner and has drawn No. 1, which uocdleb ,L,(sE..O ,simwoL could be against him.

CLOUDAGE: Brilliant winner at Motukarara. Came home well for second to Wildwood Chief at trials. Must be one of the better prospects. DIEPPE: Is speedy, but at times not too reliable. Outside chance.

DOUCE: Has drawn second line, but usually a quick beginner. Is in great order and could surprise. FORSHY: Has raced a shade unluckily for third at two starts this season. Smart sprinter entitled to consideration. HURRY ON: Gained a win and a fourth at Greymouth last month. Is most promising young pacer. Has drawn second line and will need luck to secure a reasonable run. {MECCA STAR: Makes little appeal. OVERNIGHT: Good second to Dominica at Oamaru. Capable sprinter when allowed to make his own rules, but to date has not shown much fight in a hard finish. Must be considered. RULING CASTE: Looks In great heart at the moment and is racing quite well. Outside chance, but would be preferred over longer distance. SILVER MICA: Deserved win at Greymouth last month and could add Interest here. Is still on improve. SIRRETTA: Disappointed a shade at Oamaru when last. Will have to be taken on trust, but if caught in mood could be prominent. SPACE CADET: Outstanding at trials, following on win at Oamaru. In spite of bad draw must be given splendid chance. WHY NOT: Failed in sprint on second day at Oamaru, after good fourth over two miles two days earlier. Looks well. Will be bracketed with Space Cadet. WILDWOOD CHIEF: Finished fine fifth over two miles when making fresh start at Oamaru. Won at trials and is obviously fast approaching his peak. Drawn well and looks likely winner.
