10l,000 Spend Day In East Berlin
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WEST BERLIN, November 8. A record 101,000 West Berliners went through the wall today to visit relatives in East Berlin.
One died just 300 yards short of the crossing point. Otto Greczmiel, aged 61, had a heart attack while waiting in a queue of cars to enter East Berlin.
On Monday an East German pensioner, Anna Goebler, aged 83, had a heart attack when she met her daughter for the first time in three years at a West Berlin railway station. Today’s record turn out compares with 92,180 last
Sunday, and brings the total so far in the two-week scheme to 377,000. Last Christmas, when West Berliners were allowed to make several trips instead of only one as in the present scheme, they made 1,200,000 visits in 18 days. During the last six days, nearly 7000 East Germans have arrived here under the East German scheme to let pensioners make one fourweek visit to the West each year.
