Maori Conversion In Hong Kong Dock

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 6. The Union Steam Ship Company has placed an order with the Taikoo Dockyard and Engineering Company, of Hong Kong, for the work of converting the interisland steamer Maori to a drive-on ship. The managing director (Mr F. K. Macfarlane) said today the Taikoo dockyard won the contract in competition with tenders from United Kingdom and Australian shipyards. The principal conversion work involves gutting most of “C” deck for the carriage of vehicles loaded though a stern door, and providing alternative accommodation for passengers and crew on the promenade and bridge decks.

Other features include the removal of the samson posts, winches and derricks, and the provision of a pleuger bow lateral thrust unit to increase manoeuvrability in berthing. The Maori will be withdrawn from service after Easter, 1965, and is expected to leave Wellington for Hong Kong early in May, arriving back in mid-November, 1965, preparatory to entering the Wellington-Lyttelton service in conjunction with the new Wahine. While the Maori is undergoing conversion, the Welling-ton-Lyttelton steamer express service will be carried on by the Hinemoa and the Rangatira.
