Chamber Federation Widens Competition
After sponsoring contests for junior string quartets then for any group of three to six players under the age of 25, the Chamber Music Federation has decided to widen the scope of the contest still further by organising a chamber music contest for secondary school pupils throughout the country. At the same time it is hoped to encourage interest and participation by all secondary school pupils by sponsoring an associated poster contest.
The music contest will be held in three stages. District finals in the middle of June next year will be arranged and judged by the district music adviser of the Education Department and a representative of the local society of the Chamber Music Federation.
Regional finals at the end of June will be held in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin by the respective chamber music societies. The national final will be held In Wellington in the middle of July. Arrangements will be made for the winning group to have a tour of five concerts. Billets will be arranged by the Department of Education and fares for the different contests and the prize-winning tour will be met by the federation.
Application forms, information about the contest and advice as to suitable works for different groups can be obtained from the local district music adviser or the Chamber Music Federation, P.O. Box 3391, Wellington. The designer of the best pictorial poster advertising the school chamber music contest will receive art materials worth £1 Is for the winning poster in each district The designer of the poster judged best in the whole country will receive art books worth £5 ss.
Art teachers will be asked to select the best poster for their school. The best poster for each district will be selected and sent to Wellington for display and judging at the national final.
Pupils who are at least 13 years of age and still at secondary school at June next year are invited to design a pictorial poster 16in by 22in containing only the following words: “School Chamber Music Contest.” On the back of the poster selected from each school should be written the contestant's name, date of birth, school, form, signature of teacher, and home address. Any inquiries about the contest should be made to the Chamber Jfusic Federation.
