TROTTING Upset By Fury River In Cup At Kaikoura

Fury River made an overdue return to winning form when she beat Kilkivan in a battling finish to the Kaikoura Cup yesterday. Fury River had a weak form background, although she was third to Hurry On and Silver Mica on a soft track at Greymouth last month. She was the 9/8 favourite and paid £l6 5s for a win and £4 12s 6d for a place.

The Kaikoura Cup was run on a very heavy track, which did not suit many of the favoured runners, most of which were pulled up a long way from home when sadly beaten by the state of the track.

Fury River received a good run throughout the race. She moved up to follow Kilkivan when that runner worked to the front with more than three furlongs left. They were together on straightening up and after a stern duel over the final furlong, Fury River won by a head.

Fury River paced the two miles in smin 0 4-ssec, the slowest time on record in the race. A six-year-old mare by Morano from Romantic Lady, Fury River is trained at Yaldhurst by R. W. Stockdale for the estate of the late Mr G. J. Francis and Mr A. G. Blank. She was driven by M. Holmes, who drove Soanfra to win the event in 1962. Kilkivan went close to causing a major upset. He showed gameness in a hard finish and paced his best race for some time. Mitcham, Fury River, Cuddle Doon, and Seafield Scott lost ground early, Fury River recovering quickly to be sixth when the field settled down. Bruce set a slow pace early, being joined after three furlongs by Queen’s Cord. They were followed after half a mile by Kinsella and Local John, with Khraizon and Kilkivan together next, ahead of Fury River, with Lagmhor, Dulcie Mae and Talent next, clear of Cuddle Doon. There was little change in the order until the mile post where Kinsella began to drop away. Bruce stopped soon after passing the half-mile, leaving Kilkivan clear. Kilkivan led for home ahead of Fury River, with Local John, Cuddle Doon, and Queen’s Cord the only others with any chance. Fury River and Kilkivan drew clear, with Fury River winning by a head. Kilkivan was three lengths in front of Cuddle Doon, with five lengths to Local John, eight lengths to Queen’s Cord, and long gaps to Khraizon and Dulcie Mae, the only others to complete the course. Second Leg Lumumba gave further evidence of his class with a dashing win in the second leg, the Memorial Handicap. The Fury River-Lumumba double paid £137 Ils for £l. Lumumba lost about 60 yards at the start, but recovered quickly and took the lead with about six furlongs to run. From then on he was pacing easily. He turned for home clear of Our Kay. Bonvar, Bourbon Lad, and April Showers, with the others falling away. Lumumba did not look like being tested in the run home and he won handily by three lengths from Our Kay, which received a good run close to the lead. Bonvar, which was prominently placed all the way, held On for third, a length and a half in front of Bourbon Lad. Vaggi made up a little ground for fifth, ahead of Dawn Hanover, April Showers and Backward. Dawn Hanover, Borodin, April Showers, Safe Flight, and Morano Star lost ground at the start.
