CLASSROOM SHORTAGE

Hillmorton H.S. Concern

“We are likely to be short of four classrooms for the first term next year,” said Mr 0. W. G. Lewis, headmaster of Hilmorton High School, in his report to the monthly meeting of the school board last evening. Mr Lewis said the Education Department had said that additions would begin early in the New Year. The work should be finished in May. “Since this shortage is going to be with us for at least a term it will be necessary to make temporary arrangements to house at least two classes,” he said. The meeting considered using pre-fabricated buildings, tents, or a house recently bought for teacher accommodation. The meeting recommended that pre-fabri-cated classrooms be used only as a last resort. A resolution was passed that the building committee be given power to approach the Superintendent of Edution to discuss the use of the house, or any other measure it should decide upon. A request by the pupils of the school for the installation of a slot telephone in the school was approved. This would be more convenient for both staff and pupils who had to share the office telephone at present. There was a general discussion of the merits of television teaching in schools. The meeting thought the new channel might be used, but decided to hold over the discussion until the next meeting for further consideration. Payments of £351 16s lid and the school budget up to October 31 were accepted.

Mr Lewis said there were seven new appointments to the staff for next year, and these were confirmed. They are Mrs N. C. Jacobs (commercial), Misses H. M. Hutton (physical education) and P. A. Parsons (English), Messrs P. D. Carter (physical education). M. R. B. Deaker (geography), R. P. Kingston (physics), and S. E. H. Polglase (biology).
