More Investigations On Kapuni Gas

(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, November 2. Three firms of overseas consultants to make more tests on the use of Kapuni gas will probably be named this week by the Minister of Mines (Mr Shand).

The Cabinet has approved the engagement of consultants to make a market survey, to advise on the building of pipelines, and to make independent checks on the available resources.

This decision will mean shelving, at least for a time, proposals to use Kapuni gas

as a heat source for a steampower station. The Government wants to be sure it is making the best economic use of the gas. At the same time, it is concerned about the possibility

of supplies of natural gas being not as expensive as previously thought. For a permanent enterprise, an assurance of more natural gas would be almost essential. Before a decision about pipelines is made, the Government wants to be sure the considerable capital outlay will be justified. There is also the problem, yet to be solved, of the effect of Kapuni gas utilisation on the output of West Coast gas-making coal.
