OPENING OF NEW WING
Classrooms At Avonside The new block of eight classrooms at the Avonside Girls’ High School will be opened by the Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella) on Friday, November 27. The classrooms have been completed and in use all this term, and the building, of brick, concrete and wood, replaces four old classrooms and provides an additional four rooms. The block, which is sep arate from the other buildings, is on the site of the
original school which opened in 1919 with two classes each of 40 pupils. The school was then a side school of the Christchurch Girls’ High School. The new block has been named the Kathleen M. Gresson wing, in honour of Miss K. M. Gresson, who was one of the first two teachers, and who in 1928 became principal of the school. It was in this year that the school became a separate entity from the girls’ high school.
