TWO-MILE GALLOP

"Th* Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL, Nov. 1. Two New Zealand Cup candidates, Calvados (E. J. Didham) and Birthright (J. R. Dowling), both trained by J. Didham, were worked over two miles at Wyndham after the meeting on Saturday. Calvados made the running by three to four lengths from Birthright over the first mile and over the last mile the pair were always on terms. They completed the full distance in 3min 35sec, the last mile in Imtn 43sec, the last six furlongs in Imin 17 3-ssec, and final half-mile in Slsec. Both were doing their work well over the final furlong with Birthright shading Calvados and appearing to be doing • little the better.

E. J. Didham will have the choice of mounts in the cup but on Saturday night ho had not made a decision.

' R. J. Skelton, who is at present in Melbourne, is likely to have the ride on Bellarook in the Stewards' Handicap.

E. A. Winsloe, the trainer of Bellarook, said at Wyndham on Saturday that no definite decision had been made but it was expected that Skelton would accept the mount. J. H. Dowling, who is to ride Palisade and Warfare at Riccarton, will also be on Lovely Day, Summer Magic, BeUman and Baalbek.

Silver Spire will be ridden by B. J. Anderton, who won on him at Gore, in the Rlccarton Handicap.
