Go-Kart Noise “Very High’'
“The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, Nov. 1. Go-karts using the Rosebank road domain have been tested for noise by the Auckland City Council noise abatement committee after complaints by residents living near the domain. The chairman of the committee, Mr J. H. Dale, said he had attended the domain with a traffic officer on Labour Day. They had tested the noise of the go-karts with noise level meters. A strong wind ruled out readings outside the domain, but on the track the highest reading was 120 decibels, which was very high.
“Noise at this level can be injurious to health,” said Mr dale, “but persons involved in a sport like this are too excited and don’t notice it.” Most of the go-karts recorded 100 to 105 decibels
which was noisy, but not troublesome at any great distance from the track.
There were plenty of trucks in the city which had a reading up to 95 decibels. “If they can keep the noise down to 100-105 decibels I don’t think there will be any complaints,” he said. Mr Dale is a former champion motor-cyclist and is sympathetic toward the motorcyclists and go-kart drivers who use the domain. He knows their problems and is anxious to help them. Motor-cyclists have said they will fit silencers to their machines, and Mr Dale has suggested that the go-karts should have similar equipment.
