ALIENS AS MASTERS Fishermen Irate At Govt’s Proposal
(A'cto Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 1. Proposed amendments to the Shipping and Seamens’ Act allowing aliens to be masters of New Zealand fishing vessels are to be objected to by the Auckland Fishermen’s Association.
The president (Mr W. Jennings) at the annual meeting attended by 100 commercial
fishermen on Saturday said he had heard that Norwegians were to be employed in trawlers at Napier.
“If the Government carries on the way it is going, we are likely to have Japanese manning our boats,” he said. “If we don’t jump on this one now, we could be left open as a bad trap in the future.”
It was agreed that aliens should not be used, unless they were bona fide residents in New Zealand for not less than 10 years.
