GOOD RECOVERY BY WEST-UNIVERSITY

That West University was able to recover from the early loss of G. T. Dowling and B. F. Hastings was due to a forcing innings by J. R. Veitch and the tenacity and determination of the lower order batsmen. Veitch hit powerfully in front of the wicket and while he was in, the Initiative was firmly in the hands of the batsmen. The game turned strongly in Lancaster Park's favour after his dismissal but it was unable to press home the advantage. Both P. E. Wallace and R. K. Allen batted sensibly; they waited for the loose ball and

hit It hard, and West-Univer-sity, which had lost five for 81 recovered to muster a respectable total. With P. A. Sharp, Allen put on 49 runs for the seventh wicket, a partnership which produced from Sharp some strokes of remarkable subtlety. B. Andrews bowled well for Lancaster Park. He was not at full pace but managed to make the ball move in the air and lift sharply. R. M. Gearry hurried the ball through and demanded constant attention. The fast pitch did not suit the slow bowlers. The Lancaster Park batsmen did not show the singleness of purpose of their opponents, and at a time when watchfulness and restraint was called for, they threw their wickets away with impetuous strokes. From M. D. Randle, however, came an innings which lifted the day’s play from mediocrity. A fine offside player, he has all the grace and power of the left-hander. D. J. Beuth bowled his !n--swingers to good account, and in his second spell of eight overs his figures were four for 13. Bowling from a shortened run, G. A. Bartlett was still very fast but was again plagued with no-ball problems. The umpires were Messrs L. C. Moore and L. C. Johnston.
