Sumner Firemen Win Championship Shield
The championship shield for the Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades’ Association’s annual competitions, held at the Lyttelton sports ground on Saturday, was won by Sumner, with 48 points. Rangiora, which won the Stokes Cup, was second with 42 points, and Darfield was third with 32 points. Twenty-one volunteer brigades from all over Canterbury took part in the competitions. More than 100 firemen were welcomed by Mr N. E. Kirk, the member of Parliament for Lyttelton, and other speakers were the De-puty-Mayor of Lyttelton (Mr R. H. Duff) and the president of the association (Senior Station Officer D. Mardon, of the Sydenham station). The trophies were presented by Mr Kirk and Senior Station Officer Mardon at a social evening held in the Lyttelton Harbour Board hall on Saturday.
Results were as follows: Two-man Hose And Standpipe, Wet, Under 21 Years, for Bowman Cup.—Kaiapol No. 1 1;
Geraldine No. 1 2, Pleasant Poiht 3, Timaru 4, Kaiapol No. 25, Darfieid-Oxford 6.
Four-man Laying Line of Hose and Replacing Disabled Length, for Hefford Cup.—Rangiora 1, Kaiapol 2, Lyttelton 3, Sumner 4; Darfield 5, Geraldine 6.
Hose and Standpipe With Dividing Breeching, for Lyttelton Licensed Vlctualers’ Cup.— Kaiapol 1, Fairlie 2, Rangiora 3, Sumner 4, Geraldine 5, Cust 6. Four-man Trailer Puinp, for Carson Memorial Cup.—Sumner 1, Darfield 2, Rangiora 3, Temuka 4, Geraldine 5, Pleasant Point 6.
Four-man Motor Squad Drill, for Hanafin Rose Bowl.—Sumner 1, Darfield 2, Temuka 3, Geraldine 4, Rangiora 5, Ashburton 6. Hose and Standpipe With Breeching, for Waimate Fire Brigade Cup.—Sumner 1, Rangiora 2, Darfield 3. The' H. W. Stokes Memorial Shield was won by Temuka and Kaiapol.
