Timaru Pair Shares Foursomes Title

(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, November 1. For the fifth time the New Zealand amateur foursomes golf title will be shared.

Two pairs—B. V. Watt and G. P. Vesty (Timaru) and D. K. Boone (Rotorua) and T. S. Leech (Taupo) finished with 36-hole totals of 148 when the 1964 title was decided at St. Andrews, Hamilton, on Saturday.

Watt and Vesty had two rounds of 74, while Leech and Boone added 75 to their morning round of 73.

The last time the title was shared was at Invercargill in 1960. when Watt, partnered by B. T Boys (Hamilton), and the New Zealand representatives, S. G. Jones (Hastings) and R. C. Murray (Christchurch), finished equal. With their 73, Leech and Boone held third place after the first round. The leaders at this stage were A. W. Middleton and R. L. Pease (Stratford), with 70, and one stroke away were the young Hamilton pair, D. J. Ryan and I B. A. Stevens. Three Challengers Watt and Vesty were equal with the Aucklanders. F. Malloy and V. Pirihi, on 74. Watt and Vesty were among the first to finish their second round, and at that stage it looked as though three pairs —Leech and Boone, Middleton and Pease, and Jones and R. M. Knight (Otaki) —would head off their total of 148. Middleton and Pease, however, were bunkered on the short eighteenth. It cost them two strokes to get clear and they two-putted to finish with a total of 150. Leech and Boone continued to •core well on the final nine, but they needed a birdie at the last hole to take the title. Missed Putt to Win When Boone's tee shot landed 6ft from the pin it looked as though Leech, a sure putter, would give them the title. However his putt was not good enough and they had to be content with 148, the same as Watt and Vesty. Jones and the promising Knight attracted a lot of attention. They had a 74 in the first

round, but could not repeat the effort in the second.

Coming to the seventeenth they needed two birdies to win the title. Although Knight hit a magnificent tee shot, Jones’s approach was not strong enough, and they scored a four. With a par bogey three on the eighteenth they finished in 150. The two New Zealand representatives, J. D. Durry and E.

J. McDougall, finished tenth equal on 154. Tomorrow, the first 18 holes of the qualifying 36 holes for the amateur championship will be played. The second 18 will be played on Tuesday, and the match-play begins on Wednesday. Foursomes scores:— 148—G. P. Vesty and B. V. Watt (Timaru), 74, 74; T. S. Leech (Taupo) and D. K.
