80,000 Berliners Cross Border
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
WEST BERLIN, Nov. 1. Nearly 80,000 West Berliners, with day passes, crossed into East Berlin yesterday to be reunited with relatives living in the eastern half of the city.
More than half the visitors went by underground and elevated railway. The visitors were supposed to be out of East Berlin by
midnight but several crossing points were kept open until 1 a.m. to let late-comers through. The visits, which will go on for a fortnight, are the first since last Christmas and New Year, when 1,200,000 visits were made under the original passes scheme.
West Berliners will be able to vis’t East Berlin until November 12, when the first visiting period ends. The second visiting period will be over Christmas and New Year. The other two periods of the new day-pass agreement cover Easter and Whitsun.
Nearly one million daypasses have been issued at 16 West Berlin pass offices this month for this year’s autumn and Christmas visits.
