City Fountains
Sir,—Mr Lamb wonders why the city isn’t beautiful with more fountains. What of the ones we own? The Peacock fountain is stored, too corroded for present use. Does this mean it will never be used? The High street fountain stands dry; the basin leaks. There are many, many engineers employed by the council. Surely in this day and age their combined talents could devise a way of sealing a pond so that a fountain could play again?— Yours, etc., UNDINE. October 16, 1964. [The Town Clerk (Mr C. G. Bowie) said that in 1949 when the Peacock fountain was dismantled, it was in a very bad state of repair, and re-erec-tion could be difficult and expensive. Major repairs were required to the bowl of the High street fountain and also to the side channels, and to date it had not been possible to make provision for this fairly extensive work.]
