FIRE TANK—We are sorry to learn that on the trial of the Californian pump in connection with Mr. Lane's mill-wheel, constructed to supply the recently completed fire tank with water, it was found that the straps did not work well, and were constantly coming off the pulleys. We believe that the surface of such pulleys are usually made slightly concave, which tends to keep the strap in its place. Possibly this may account for the failure, as in this instance they are flat. RETURNS—The

following is the official returns from the Christchurch and Lyttelton gaols for the month of October: In Christchurch there were 41 prisoners in the gaol, 28 of whom were males and 13 females. Of the former 20 were undergoing imprisonment with hard labor, and 8 imprisonment only; of the latter, one was committed for trial at the Supreme Court, 3 were undergoing imprisonment with hard labor, and 9 imprisonment only. had been under sentence from the Resident Magistrate’s Court. At Lyttelton the number of prisoners amounted to 86, all males, viz., for trial at the Supreme Court, 7; hard labor, 59; imprisonment, 10; debtors, 10.
