VACANCIES—PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANT NEW ZEALAND GOVERNMENT TRADE COMMISSIONERS THERE ARE VACANCIES In the Department of Industries and Commerce for appointments overseas as Assistant New Zealand Government Trade Commissioners. The type of appointee required is a person of good personality, with some knowledge of New Zealand’s trade and industry, who has completed a university degree or professional qualification, aged between 24 and 30 years, and who has had a few’ years’ experience in a sphere connected with trade. While this latter experience is desirable, applicants who have only recently completed a degree will also be considered. Those selected for these positions will be appointed to the staff of the Department at commencing salaries up to £1335 p.a. according to age, qualifications and experience. Applicants selected will not be designated Assistant Trade Commissioners initially but, following appointment, they will undergo a training period with the Department and, subject to satisfactory performance, they will be posted to overseas trade offices as vacancies arise. When abroad an officer’s salary is supplemented by location, family, and rent allowances which vary according to the needs of the location. Successful applicants will be members of the Industries and Commerce Department, eligible for promotion with other officers of the Department and for further postings overseas after completion of their initial appointment. ANTARCTICA BIOLOGICAL AND OCEANOGRAPHIC EXPEDITION TWO OCEANOGRAPHERS are required to assist with oceanographic surveys in the Macquarie Ridge and Balleny Islands areas from New Zealand and United States ships during the coming Antarctic season. One Biologist is required to carry out ornithological and zoological work on the Balleny Islands and on islands in the Ross Sea. Applicants should have appropriate degree qualifications and/or technical experience. Salaries—Scientific Officers up to £1540 p.a.; Technicians up to £1135 p.a.; plus Antarctic Allowance at the rate of £350 p.a. for married men or £2OO p.a. for single men.
