SHIPS WAIT IN STREAM
Overcrowding At Lyttelton
Fine weather is helping to clear Lyttelton’s backlog of shipping, which built up during the tallow dispute. There were 622 watersiders employed on the waterfront yesterday and apart from the Hinemoa only two overseas vessels completed work and sailed. They were the Tugela and Crusader. Vessels idle for most of the day were the Kaimai, Breeze. Port Adelaide, Holmwood and Onehunga. The Katui and Shinyo Maru were shortmanned. Two new arrivals which found berths yesterday morning, were also idle. They were the Wairata and Awanui. New arrivals which anchored in the stream yesterday were the Cap Bonavista, Van Cloon, Kaimanawa and Hotunui. More vessels are expected today. These include the Hinakura, Parera, Waitaki and Kawatiri. The Kirribilli is due tomorrow. Bound from Florida with 7800 tons of phosphate for local discharge, the Norbega is now expected in the stream on Monday.
Apart from this build-up of tonnage, two tankers are expected this week-end as well as the normal inter-island passenger steamer traffic. The pressure should be relieved today when several vessels may sail. Among these are the Konini, Katui. South Africa Star, Breeae and Saracen.
