Charles Slips Four Behind
(K.Z. Press Association —Copyright) SYDNEY, October 30. R. J. Charles, of New Zealand, slipped from two strokes behind the leader after the first round to four shots behind with a second round of 75 in the Australian Open golf championship at the Lakes course, Sydney, today.
The overnight leader, on 70, John Sullivan, the 30-year-old Adelaide professional, added « 73 to retain a one-stroke advantage over another Australian, Len Thomas. Six more Australians—Alan Murray, Darrell Welsh, Bruce Crampton, Bruce Devlin, Frank Phillips and Ted Ball—are on 147. The American, Jack Nicklaus, improved with a 71, and shared 146 with the English professional, Guy Wolstonholme. W. J. Godfrey just survived the 152 cut off, adding a 73 today to his first-round 79, but J. Harvey failed again with a 94 and did not qualify. Cobie Legrange, the young South African, who had looked a strong contender after his win in the 'Wills Masters tournament in Melbourne last week, failed to make the cut-off for the final
36 holes tomorrow. He shot a 76 today to give him a total of 154. The leading scores are: 143 — J. Sullivan (Australia), 70, 73. 144 — L. Thomas (Australia), 75, 69. 145 A.
