RE-ENTRY VEHICLE

Successful Test (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CAPE KENNEDY, Oct. 28. A streamlined, delta-shaped payload rocketed down the eastern test range at 8863 m.p.h. last night in a successful trip to gather information for manned ferry vehicles of the future. The 1200-pound Asset vehicle was boosted aloft by a Thor missile. It was the fourth in a series of six test flights in the 40 million dollars Asset programme to check materials and designs that will withstand searing temperatures of up to 6000 degrees Fahrenheit during a glide re-entry from space to the earth’s atmosphere. Asset stands for Aerothermodynamics Elastic Structural Systems Environmental Tests. The 1000-mile flight took about 15 minutes and reached a peak altitude of 30 miles. No recovery was planned.
