SIXTH-FORM BURSARIES
Mairehau H.S. Views
The Mairehau High School Board has welcomed the new sixth-form bursaries proposed by the University Grants Committee but expressed the hope that pupils will not aspire only to these when they may be capable of gaining university scholarships. The Mairehau statements says:— “The board welcomes these proposals as providing a more realistic goal for a large number of sixth-form pupils who would not be able to meet the challenge of the scholarship course. At the same time it is possible to provide for non-scholarship studies such as music taken for Trinity College or Royal Schools of Music. The board feels that some difficulties in organisation may be expected and that there would be a danger of the present situation being reversed, particularly in small schools, so that scholarship students become geared to the bursary students.
“The board requests that consideration be given to advancing the time of the scholarship examination so that it may be completed before the end of the school year. At present many pupils who have contributed most to the school and deserved most from it, are prevented by examination requirements from sharing in the end-of-year occasions in their final year of attendance. The board considers this most unfortunate. “The board further requests that consideration be given to increasing the values of bursaries and scholarships to provide a worth-while monetary reward for scholarship and effort.”
