Minister Appeals To Another
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Oct 22. The Minister of Works (Mr Allen), will seek the cooperation of his Cabinet colleague, the Minister of Railways (Mr McAlpine) to have no more illuminating advertising signs erected in railway reserves beside state highways. The National Roads Board, of which Mr Allen is chairman, decided today to continue opposing the erection of such signs. The secretary (Mr C. N. Johnson) said in the past the Railways Department had not shown “much sympathy" with the board’s efforts to eliminate advertising signs from the open highway. “In fact, it is inclined to dispute the claim that such signs are detrimental to road safety,” he said. It had become evident the department would only consider removing or resiting a sign when evidence could be produced justifying action on safety grounds, said Mr Johnson.
