CARRIER PIGEONS
Use In Buenos Aires
Carrier pigeons have temporarily come back into their own to replace the telephone in one part of Greater Buenos Aires. The Grand Bourg suburban area has been built so fast that telephone services have not yet caught up. One chemist there has solved the problem of ordering pharmaceutical supplies by using carrier pigeons on a 15 minute flight to his suppliers in the Haedo area. Two or three hours after a pigeon is loosed, the suppliers deliver the order, accompanied by another pigeon for use next time. One Argentine centre for the artificial insemination of cattle is also using carrier pigeons to give urgent advice
when farmers have cows ready for insemination. The farmer merely dispatches his pigeon, with the farm indentification label, and the centre sends out its expert—together with another pigeon.
