TRAINING FOR JOINERY
Views On Revision To Be Sought The annual conference of the New Zealand Joinery Manufacturers’ Federation decided to refer the question of revised training of apprentices to its branches. Suggestions would then be forwarded to the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) for discussion by the commission which is expected to start its sittings early next year. The conference agreed to send a letter to the New Zealand Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship Committee asking it to look into the question of excluding Saturday morning work from the apprenticeship course. Representatives of the Canterbury Joinery Manufacturers’ Association will meet the Ministers of Industry and Commerce (Mr Marshall), of Forests (Mr Gerard), and Housing (Mr Rae) to discuss the Government’s proposal to process all West Coast timber at the West Coast. About 60 per cent of the timber available in New Zealand at present was supplied by the West Coast, said the president of the Canterbury association (Mr J. Bull) at the federation’s conference.
