BASSER DEAD
Phil Anthropic Millionaire (N.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, October 20. Sir Adolph Basset, the Polish-born Australian philanthropist, businessman and racehorse owner, died in Sydney today at the age of 78 after a long illness. Sir Adolph Basser, born in Cracow and trained as an optometrist in Vienna, gave away more than £528,000 for medical and educational research and the relief of poverty in New South Wales. He came to Australia at the age of 20 and began his career as a commercial traveller selling snectacles. m the 1920’s he began a jewellery factory which he turned into a substantial company after buying out a customer in 1928. He was knighted by the Queen in 1962. His best horse was Delta, winner of the 1949 V.R.C. ' Derby and ISSI Melbourne I Cup.
