Obituary MR L. A. ABLETT
Mr Leonard Arnold Ablett, who died in Hawera on Monday after a short illness, had been editor of the “Hawera Star” for 35 years until his retirement in 1963, and had continued to write leading articles for the newspaper until last week. He was 65. Mr Ablett entered journalism as a reporter on the “Sun,” Christchurch, and later worked for the “North Otago ’Hmes” and “The Press” before going to Hawera. When the Hawera company was reorganised in 1934 he became manager as well as editor. He was an active representative of smaller newspapers in the Newspaper Proprietors' Association, and took a keen interest in the work of the Commonwealth Press Union. He was at one time chairman of the New Zealand section’s committee on the training of journalists. Mr Ablett was married twice. He is survived by his second wife and by two daughters of the first marriage, Mrs Hugh Jones and Mrs Max Rogers, both of Christchurch.
