Second Carnival At Showgrounds

The Rangiora Showgrounds will also draw crowds on Monday when the Junior Committee of the Canterbury area, New Zealand Horse Society and the Rangiora Jaycees hold a joint carnival and show jumping programme.

This will be the second time such an event has been held in Rangiora, the first being last year. The proceeds will be shared between two organisations. The Jaycee’s half will be allocated to the St. John Ambulance Association while the horse committee’s share will go to the S.P.C.A.

The programme will be similar to last year. Many novelty items and stalls

will supplement an excellent programme of show jumping including one South Island championship. The junior horse committee, though only in its second year has been doing a very important job fostering the interest of young riders. Monday's show has attracted riders from many parts of the South Island. The main event will be the South Island Juvenile championship for riders under 21. This event is run over two courses. The first round will be a puissance course of large fences and time will not be the important factor. For the second round the fences will be lowered and time will be important Another interesting jump will be the jig-saw event In this pairs of horses, drawn by ballot will jump 12 fences with the fastest pair winning. The jumping contests start at 8.30 a.m. In between jumping events in the ring there will be a series of novelty events. Included in these

will be a display by Buckett’s Gymnasiuin. Of Interest to many people will be an exhibition by the Army of signalling apparatus and camouflage. Members of the public will also have a chance to taste Army food as there will be a cookhouse set up on the grounds. A special feature of this year’s carnival will be a Miss North Canterbury contest It will be confined to girls from the district who will compete for money prizes. Traction engines will be on display and will also give an exhibition of their strength and power. Members of the vintage car club will again have their cars on display. Also the heavily modified modern stock car from the Rod Benders Club may be also on the ground. Of special interest to the children will be the pony rides, merry-go-rounds and chair-o-plane and other parts of the fun fair left over from the show on Saturday. Of interest to older persons will be the search for needles in a haystack. The finder of each needle will get a prize. Special buses will run from Christchurch to the carnival where hot water and refreshments will be available.

Always of special interest to children is the North Canterbury’s Kennel Club’s championships which are held each year in conjunction with the show. However adults are also interested in these dogs any many put in weeks of work grooming them in preparation for the competitions. Again this year dogs of ail shapes and sizes will stand and parade before

the judge in the hope of winning one of the coveted prizes. The picture shows two Chihuahuas, possibly the smallest dog in the world. These animals were originally bred in Mexico for human food.
