TROTTING Bruce, Seafield Scott For Greymouth Double

Form runners in Bruce and Seafield Scott should be sound prospects for the double on the first night of the Greymouth Trotting Club’s spring meeting tomorrow. Bruce will have only eight rivals in the first leg, the President’s Handicap, but there will probably be a capacity field of 16 in the second leg, the Raceway Handicap.

Bruce, a member of R. H. Negus’s Springston team, has had a win and a second from his two starts this season. He won narrowly but handily over 13 furlongs at New Brighton on September 19, and at his other start he was a fine second to a speedy pacer in Cloudage over 12 furlongs at Motukarara.

Bruce usually runs his races out gamely and if he receives a reasonable run tomorrow night, he should be too strong in stamina for most of his rivals.

Golden Sari has failed to return a dividend in five starts this season. However, she suggested an early win when she forced all of a strong pace in the race won by Cloudage. It was only in the last few yards that she was headed, but she held on for a close fourth. She is a splendid front-runner and she will only need to race up to her best to beat most in this race.

Silver Mica, a member of W. S. Cummings’s Greymouth team, should be the pick of the West Coast horses in the field. She finished third behind Bellajily and Morano Star on her home track on September 12 after starting from 36 yards. She showed ability to finish close up at Hutt Park at her only other starts this season after starting from the second line and receiving a poor run. She looks much more favourably placed in this field and could easily surprise. Ruling Caste has been rehandicapped to 36 yards after her fine win at Forbury Park last Saturday. This might not be enough to keep her out

of the money again, but her task will be a difficult one if Golden Sari sets a hot pace.

Hurry On and Beau Rossa will be making a fresh start. Both showed ability in their racing last season, particularly Hurry On, which had three wins and eight placings from 20 starts. If he is forward enough, he could give a good account of himself, as he looks to be above average in ability. Linda Marie and Fury River have done nothing of note in their racing this season and a win for either of them would be a major upset Second Leg Seafield Scott has had a win and three placings from five starts this season. He looks the logical favourite for the Raceway Handicap. Seafield Scott finished a good second to Kinsella in the October Handicap on the first night at Forbury Park on October 10. That effort is superior to those returned by most of his opponents in this big field and if he repeats it he should win handily. He was a runaway winner over 13 furlongs on this course on September 12. Our Kay has had a win and five placings from eight starts this season and her consistency entitles her to serious consideration. She was run-ner-up to a capable pacer in Dieppe at Motukarara at her last start. Megaton, a stablemate of Ruling Caste, has raced most unluckily this season. She finished eleventh on the first night at Forbury Park after meeting trouble early. Megaton has drawn the front line and she should be capable of a bold showing. Tunnel Road has been a little disappointing since he won at Addington Raceway early last month. He finished a close seventh at Motukarara last time out Tunnel Road should appreciate the sprint distance at Greymouth and he could easily upset calculations.

Bonvar and Morano Star have paced useful races at times this season and they could add interest to the finish. However, they should be held quite safely by Seafield Scott Our Kay, and Megaton. Changeable weather is forecast but unless there is heavy rain, the track will be in splendid order. Fields, with form, for the doubles races are:—
