DRIVER’S LICENCES

Fee Increase Wanted Representations to the Government for an increase in the annual driving licence fee were approved by the City Council last evening as a remit to the Municipal Association.

In 1915 the council had a by-law making a fee of 10s for a licence to drive a motor-car and 5s for a licence to ride a motor-cycle, and other local bodies had similar fees. They remained until 1925 when an act of Parliament provided for 5s and this has remained unchanged. The finance committee gave the council a comparison of motor drivers’ licence fees and the cost of traffic administration, central, uniforms and vehicle maintenance. In 1940, fees were £4566 and costs £10,889, giving a percentage of 42; the percentage of fees to cost rose to 52 in 1950, but in 1955 and 1960 was only 19.
