TRANSPORT LICENSING

Authority Reserves Decision Decision was reserved by the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J. S. Haywood) in an application by Canterbury Dairy Farmers, Ltd. (Mr C. B. Atkinson), for a continuous goods service licence.

The application was opposed by the New Zealand Factories and Related Trades Employees Industrial Workers’ South Island branch. The union was represented by Mr B. McClelland. Mr McClelland said the real purpose of the application was for the company to be granted a transport licence which would bring it under the Motor and Horse Drivers’ Award instead of the Dairy Factory Employees’ Award. The men would get more pay than under the dairy award, he said.

Lewis Raymond Fowler, manager of Canterbury Dairy Farmers, Ltd., said his company had operated for many years without a licence as they believed they were carting their own goods. After getting legal advice they Were told they were breaking the law so they applied for a licence.

Mr Fowler denied a suggestion by Mr McClelland that the application had been made because of a letter from the Labour Department asking the company to employ its drivers under the Dairy Workers’ Award. From the financial point of view he did not mind what award they were employed under.
