Almost All Legislation Now Before The House
WELLINGTON, October 17. Aiming, as he said, to avoid having too many bills to deal with in the last days of the session, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) has announced his intention to speed up consideration of legislation. He said he had decided to to propose that urgency be accorded a number of bills next Tuesday, perhaps 10 or 15, thereby adjusting the pattern of the week which has allotted Tuesday to the consideration of the Estimates. Estimates for departments under the control of four ministers remain to be considered. With the four bills introduced to the House today the Government had presented almost all the legis-

lation it proposed to bring down this session. Mr Holyoake said forthcoming bills would be a Superannuation Amendment, a second Finance Bill, a Reserves and Other Lands Bill, a bill for local legislation and a Statutes Amendment Bill. There would probably be an Air Services Licensing Amendment Bill and there would also be an amendment to the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act and a 55-clause Income Tax Bill. The House would also have to consider the Supplementary Estimates and an Appropriation Bill which would each take half a day. Twenty-five bills are on the Order Paper at the second-reading stage: 14 await consideration in committee; 12 public bills remain to be reported back by committees. Five local bills are still on the order paper. The Prime Minister said he did not expect the private member’s bill for racial equality in contracts introduced by Mr N. V. Douglas (Opp., Auckland Central) to be discussed further this session.
