THUNDERHEAD BEATEN
Second Fourth In Australia (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Oct. 18. The New Zealand three-year-old Thunderhead failed again at his second Australian start in the Burwood Handicap (10f.), at Caulfield yesterday. Although on trial over the distance, Thunderhead was backed like a certainty and firmed from 2/1 to 6/4. After being in a handy position for most of the way, Thunderhead could finish no better than fourth.
The race went to countrytrained Prince Camillo (8/1), which finished strongly over the final furlong to win comfortably by two lengths from Rustom (7/2). Klim King (100/1), was a similar distance away third. At his only other start in Melbourne, Thunderhead was well fancied in the Caulfield Guineas last Saturday. He finished fourth to Yangtze, which won yesterday’s Caulfield Cup. Most of the colt’s New Zealand wins were over six furlongs although he won the Great Northern Guineas over a mile at Ellerslie at his last start before coming to Australia.
There are now doubts that Thunderhead will attempt the Victoria Derby.
