DEAR PAL’S SUCCESS
Two-Year-Old Classic
Dear Pal made no nee of the Wellesley Stakes in the last furlong of the two-year old classic event at Trentham on Saturday.
This lightly-framed filly by My Pal from the Defaulter mare Deodar, won running away by two lengths and a quarter from the Christ-church-owned, Riccartontrained White Rajah, which paid £l2 16s. Silent Night (by Comte de Grasse) came fast and late for third, also at long odds. Mr R. R. Gallon, who lives in the Wairarapa, secured a notable bargain when he bought Deodar cheaply two years ago. Deodar, by Defaulter, was then carrying Saturday’s Wellesley Stakes winner. which is now unbeaten in two starts. N. Eastwood has ridden Dear Pal each time. She became the first Tren-tham-trained two-year-old to win the Wellesley Stakes since 1946 when Lady Christine won for Mr C. Pateman. Natter was the best behind the dividend-payers. She was close behind Te Mania on the inside to about half way, and ran the race out fairly solidly, but never so as to raise hopes for a victory.
Ameera was fifth close behind Natter, and Te Mania weakened to sixth in a gap. Hi Court, from Takanini, was a disappointing favourite. He faded badly from the front end to finish eleventh. Pizzicato showed early speed after starting 15 wide, but petered out to finish tenth.
