INDIAN WICKETS FALL QUICKLY

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CALCUTTA, October 18. After its collapse for 174, Australian spinners fought back magnificently to have India 130 for the loss of five wickets at stumps on the second day of the third test at Calcutta today.

When bad light stopped play 30 minutes before the scheduled stumps, India was struggling against some menacing spin bowling from T. R. Veivers and R. B. Simpson. Since tea Veivers’s bowling figures were 11.2/5/6/2. India, however, aided its own downfall by over defensive batting after an excellent start.

India scored only 69 runs between lunch and stumps—losing five wickets. There will be no play tomorrow.

India had scored 113 for two wickets at tea.

Australia, in a poor batting display, lost its remaining four wickets for only seven runs to be all out for 174. Australia was completely on the defensive by this slowturning pitch and all seven runs were scored by Redpath, who was at the wicket for 53 minutes during which 20 overs were bowled. It was an extremely poor performance by the Australians after the opening stand of 97. Ten wickets fell for only 77 runs. After a record opening stand by W. M. Lawry and R. B. Simpson, Australia collapsed on the first day and was 167 for six at the close. The weather caused a series of interruptions and play was cut by one hour 38 minutes. First a dust storm caused a delay, then rain, and finally bad light sent the players in 40 minutes early. India’s hero was the tall, left-arm spinner, S. Durrani, who finished the day with five for 73, including three
