GERRARD FAILS

Sixth And Eliminated

(Special Crspdt. N.Z.P.A.) TOKYO, Oct. 18. New Zealand’s 200 metres butterfly swimmer, D. F. Gerrard, of Otago, finished sixth in his semi-final of the 200 metres event on Satur-

day. Gerrard swam gamely, but found the international field too hot and failed to gain a place in the final. In the first semi-final, Carl Robie (United States), who set a new Olympic time in his heat earlier in the week, broke his record when he finished in 2min 9.3 sec. Gerrard swam in the second semi-final, won by the Australian, Kevin Berry, in 2min 9.Bsec. Gerrard’s time was 2min 15.4 sec.

Gerrard got away to a good start and covered the first 100 metres in Imin 2.lsec. He was still with the field at that stage but was unable to maintain the pace over the final 80 metres.

The final of the race today saw yet another new world and Olympic mark set. Berry was in front of the field throughout and won comfortably from Robie in 2min 6.6 sec, beating the American’s Olympic record by 2.7 sec and his own world record by .3sec.
