Snell And Davies Untroubled

(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) TOKYO, October 18. The two New Zealand middle distance men, P. G. Snell, the world mile record-holder, and J. L. Davies, qualified comfortably on Saturday for the semi-finals of the 1500 metres.

Snell, showing little aftereffects of his record-breaking 800 metres win the previous day, loped into fourth place in his heat, won by the Kenyan runner, K. Keino, in 3min 45fisec. W. D. Holtz, of Germany (3min 46.65ec) was second, a fraction ahead of Tom O’Hara (United States). Snell’s time, in the slowest of the four heats, was 3min 46.8 s ec. Dangerous Rivals Davies finished second to the hard-running Polish champion, W. Baran, in 3min 45.55ec. Dyrol Burleson, of the United States (3min 45.65ec) was third. The other heats produced two men—M. Bernard, of France (Smin 43.45ec) and A. Simpson, of Britain (3min 42.8 sec), who could both produce stern opposition for Snell and Davies in the later rounds. The qualifiers for the semifinals were: Simpson (Britain), Wadoux (France), Odlozil (Czechoslovakia). Allonsius (Belgium). Bernard (France). Vazic (Jugoslavia).
