SHOW SEASON OPENS AT LEESTON IN FINE WEATHER

Fine weather prevailed when the first of Canterbury’s spring shows for this season was held at Leeston on Saturday. Although rain appeared to be falling in most other districts, and at times clouds appeared to threaten a downpour, the Ellesmere Agricultural and Pastoral Association held its annual show in dry weather, apart from one or two skiffs of drizzle later in the afternoon.

Traditionally Canterbury’s first show of the season, Ellesmere maintained its good record of entries and competition.

Although the district has had very little rain recently, judges said that very few animals showed adverse effects of the drought.

Entries were about 200 above last year’s total of about 2000, the cattle classes showing the largest increase of about 105. Sheep entries were slightly bigger, and horses about the same as last year.

Competition ranged from being very strong, as in some cattle and sheep and most horse classes, to disappointing in other livestock sections.

As has become usual at agricultural and pastoral shows, the horse events earned on for some time after the other exhibits had been taken home and the sideshows closed and the tents pulled down.

However, horse judges were pleased at the increase in new horses and riders taking part. In spite of the bad weather tn districts surrounding Ellesmere and although the weather was not as good as last year’s, gate takings were about £2 above those of last year—a total of £317 ss.

For most of the day the grounds were crowded, although spectators dispersed quickly later in the day, when the weather became quite cold.

For the first time in many years, dog trials were held in association with the show, and these drew good entries.

In the implements and machinery section, the R. G. Allen Cup for the most comprehensive and best-laid-out exhibit was won by implements exhibited by W. H. Cochrane, Ltd.
