Water Heaters

Sir, —Ripple cuts do not “save power”; they only switch consumption from high-peak to "off peak” periods. Mr Shand recently told Parliament that, by the N.Z.E.D. charging for peak demands only, local authorities “were encouraged to boost wasteful usage of power” and create shortages. Mr Kirk shows that official insistence on low-efficiency water-heaters more than doubles domestic power consumption, thereby draining lakes needlessly. Indeed the startling quick recovery of lake storage, after a few fullday cuts of water-heaters and extravagant waste of electricity, indisputably demonstrates that an immense reserve of power is available as soon as more efficient waterheaters are in general use.— Yours etc., J. PATON BOYD. October 18, 1964.
