AIRPORT AT ROTORUA

Pageant For Opening (N.Z. Press Association) ROTORUA, October 4. The full development of the Mangere international airport next year will enable airline operators to bring in jet aircraft from overseas, the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said in Rotorua yesterday. Speaking at the official opening of the £300,000 Rotorua airport, Mr Holyoake said next year for the first time New Zealand would be on one of the few jet around-the-world air routes with the consequences of greater influx of passengers from overseas.

“Many of those passengers will come to Rotorua,” Mr Holyoake said. Tourism was now New Zealand’s sixth largest earner of overseas exchange. In brilliant weather a crowd of more than 10,000 saw a five-hour air pageant featuring a Vampire jet aerobatic team, a Fokker Friendship demonstration, parachute jumping, a topdressing display and a glider flying display.
