TOI PORT’S SECOND EPSOM WIN

(New’ Zealand press Association)

SYDNEY, October 4. The solidly backed Tol Port, which finished brilliantly to win his second Epsom at Randwick yesterday, will run again in the £A19,000 Metropolitan tomorrow, with Athol Mulley . his likely rider. His owner, Mr J. Parr, offered Mulley the mount after the last race yesterday. Mulley said he would take the ride if he could get a release from New Zealandbred Summer Fiesta. The A.J.C. handicapper, Mr K. Goodwin, last night rehandicapped Toi Port 61b from 8-5 to 8-11. The connexions of Toi Port are also considering taking him to Melbourne for the Caulfield Cup (l}m.) on October 17. . Tol Port, starting at 6-1, finished' brilliantly from among the tail enders at the half-mile to win the £A16,000 classic going away to a length from the unlucky Castanea (9-1). Heirloom (7-1) was two lengths away third. Toi Port’s win yesterday put

him among the racing greats, as only two other horses have won two successive Epsom handicaps. They were Melodrama in 1907 and 1908 and the mighty Chatham in 1932 and 1933; Ohly one horse has won the Epsom-Metrbpolitan double —Masquerade lit 1882. Toi Port won yesterday with a terrific finishing run that was reminiscent pf his performance in vnnning the Epsom last year. His jockey, D. Lake, was severely criticised the previous Saturday when he had Toi Port up with the leaders comlhg around the home turn in the w.f.a. George Main Stakes. His connexions had considered “sacking” Lake but, after consideration, they decided to give him another chance on Toi Port yesterday. Mr Parr paid 2500 guineas for Tol Port when hp bought the horse from the Brisbane trainer. A. Strong. The gelding has more than repaid his purchase price several times over. Yesterday’s race was worth £7OOO t.o the winner, the same as last year’s Epsom.
