Swartz Pete In Form
(N.Z. Press Association) TE AWAMUTU, October 4. Showing great form in his first start at a totalisator meeting, Swartz Pete won the first leg of the double, the two mile Gentry Lodge Handicap, on the first day of the Te Awamutu Trotting Club’s spring meeting. He was well back in the field when it settled down but made his way to the front afte ra mile and took over the lead in the straight. Covray, which had a trail throughout made a spirited bid over the last few yards but could not catch the winner: Mountain Guard was a convincing winner of the second leg, the Flying Handicap, after working his way through to an early lead. Lack of racing and recent form made bettors cautious. In spite of fine weather, good track conditions and an 11-race programme with increased stakes, the club did not have as good a turnover as it expected.
